Why is your take-home pay so much lower than your gross salary?
1. Employers bear heavy hidden costs
If your gross salary is CNY 10,000, employing you typically costs about CNY 13,000–14,000. The extra CNY 3,000+ is the employer's social insurance & housing fund (pension, medical, unemployment, work-injury, maternity, plus the fund) — roughly 30% on top of your wage.
2. Your salary is trimmed three ways
Before that CNY 10,000 reaches you, three deductions happen:
① Social insurance (employee): about 10.5% (pension 8% + medical 2% + unemployment 0.5%)
② Housing fund (employee): 5% to 12%
③ Individual income tax: progressive tax after the above two and the CNY 5,000 deduction.
That's why a CNY 10,000 gross salary often nets only CNY 7,000-something.
3. The housing fund is a hidden savings jar
Your net pay shrinks, but don't overlook the housing fund account: your contribution plus an equal employer match both land in your account. Withdrawable for buying, renting or retirement — it's entirely your money.
